Biography
Alfredo Alvarez-Ibáñez is a Member of the Corporate Department at O’Neill & Borges, where he has practiced since 1996. He advises on a broad range of commercial law and creditors’ rights matters, including real estate, commercial lending, secured transactions, asset-based finance, complex restructurings, securitizations of loans and commercial leases, and private equity transactions. Alfredo represents local and U.S.-based financial institutions, investors, and businesses in high-value transactions and distressed situations.
He regularly counsels commercial banks and non-bank lenders on licensing and regulatory compliance affecting financial companies, mortgage and leasing institutions, financial intermediaries, and providers of small personal and auto loans. His work also includes structuring and negotiating purchases, sales, and servicing arrangements for loan portfolios—including consumer, commercial, construction, auto, charged-off, and mortgage loans—representing both buyers and sellers.
Alfredo has extensive experience in the hospitality and tourism sectors, advising on the acquisition, development, financing, and restructuring of hotel, resort, and mixed-use projects. Recently, he served as Puerto Rico local counsel to Braemar in its acquisition and financing of a luxury hotel in Dorado, as well as to JRK in its acquisition and financing of a two-property, 275-key-branded hotel portfolio in San Juan. Other representative matters include advising in one of the largest real estate transactions in Puerto Rico -$1+ billion sale of 18 shopping centers- and leading the acquisition of large-scale loan portfolios and real estate assets with an aggregate unpaid principal balance of approximately $1 billion.
He has been consistently recognized for his work in real estate, commercial transactions, mergers and acquisitions and banking and financing Puerto Rico regulation. Alfredo also serves on the advisory boards of select clients, providing strategic insight on market trends, financing structures, and risk management.
